my work in this series is called “home again”, and it explores a nostalgic, layered environment where the precocious inner child co-exists within the unmasked adult. i am making these pieces partially while being my grandmother’s caretaker while living in my childhood home, so i am influenced by the plurality of roles that co-exist in the same space. in abstracting these emotions and experiences, i rely on classic design elements as well as intuitive practices to make space for vivid color and texture to play, rage, grieve, and love.
during the time when i spontaneously started making art, i regressed into a youthful naiveté as i feebly took command of the new language and power of art. i believed that portraits were the pinnacle of fine art practice, but i naturally took a turn into the bizarre. taking a pseudonym in artistic infancy gave me freedom and anonymity to explore my full fat weirdness and the dick lavender project was born.
